Product description
Lipitor Product Description
Drug Uses
Lipitor is a lipid metabolism regulator, which inhibits cholesterol synthesis in the body, thus lowering a level of low-density lipoprotein ("bad cholesterol"). Lipitor is prescribed to adolescents aged from 10 years, adults, and the elderly patients to reduce levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, and apolipoprotein B (Apo B, protein required for cholesterol production).
Lipid metabolism regulator Lipitor helps reduce the risk of stroke and myocardial infarction in patients with type 2 diabetes and patients without evident coronary heart disease, who still have some risk factors (including hypertension, smoking). Lipitor helps reduce the risk of angina, non-fatal stroke and myocardial infarction in patients with coronary heart disease.
The recommended initial dose of Lipitor is 10 or 20mg per day. The patients with a high level of "bad cholesterol" can be indicated with an initial daily dose of Lipitor 40mg. The recommended dose for adolescents is 10 mg of Lipitor a day, thus the maximum dose of the lipid metabolism regulator should not exceed 20mg per day.
Missed DoseIf you’ve accidentally forgotten to take a dose of Lipitor, skip the missed dose of this statin, if the range till the next dose is short. Lipitor can be used in case the next dose of the lipid lowering agent should be taken not so soon.
More InformationTo achieve greater efficacy, the patient is recommended to start a diet for lowering the blood lipids before the use of Lipitor. Furthermore, the patients should adhere to it throughout the whole course of hypercholesterolaemia treatment.
Clinical studies have demonstrated that Lipitor may slightly increase the level of blood sugar and cause muscle pain, aching or weakness. As a rule, these effects are transient and disappear after withdrawal of Lipitor.
Storage
It is recommended to store Lipitor at controlled temperature not above 25°C. The lipid lowering agent Lipitor must be protected from moisture, heat and light and kept out of reach of children. Do not use out of date tablets Lipitor.Lipitor Safety Information
Warnings
During hypercholesterolemia treatment, liver function is recommended to be monitored since Lipitor may cause elevated liver enzymes and result in abnormalities of liver function. Intake of Lipitor with alcohol consumption is damaging to the liver. The patients are advised to avoid alcohol during the use of lipid metabolism regulator Lipitor. Lipitor should be prescribed with caution to elderly patients (65 years and older), to the patients with renal impairment and hypothyroidism, since these patients have high risk of skeletal muscle disorders (rhabdomyolysis and myopathy).

Normally Lipitor may cause short-term and mild adverse effects, which pass without complications. In most cases (probability of about 8%), Lipitor may cause nasopharyngitis.
Approximately 7% of the patients may experience diarrhea and arthralgia due to Lipitor use. Such adverse effects as urinary tract infections and pain in extremity are reported with probability of only 6% during treatment with Lipitor. Just over 5% of patients had to stop the treatment with Lipitor due to adverse effects, caused by the lipid lowering agent. The reasons for withdrawal of Lipitor treatment can be nausea, myalgia or hepatic enzyme increase.
