Xenical product description
Drug uses
Xenical is a gastrointestinal lipase inhibitor, used to treat obesity and overweight in patients with BMI* ≥ 30 kg/m2 or BMI ≥ 27 kg/m2 with associated risk factors (excess visceral fat, hypertension, diabetes).
Xenical can also be used for reducing the risk of weight regain in obese patients after prior weight loss. Xenical is recommended in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and physical exercise in adults and adolescents aged 12 years or older.
Xenical benefit comparing to other anti-obesity drugs is that this medication is not actually absorbed from the digestive tract and does not enter the systemic blood. Therefore, Xenical is well tolerated and does not cause any serious side effects in patients.
The recommended dose of Xenical is 120mg three times a day during a main meal or within one hour after it.
* BMI is defined as the body mass divided by the square of the body height.
Missed doseDuring the treatment of obesity with Xenical, a missed dose does not have a serious negative effect on the therapy of excess weight. Yet, the patients are advised not to miss the therapeutic dose of the drug and to take it according to the scheduled dosing regimen.
If the patient has forgotten to take Xenical on time, he/she should skip the missed dose and wait for the next food intake. Do not double the dose of Xenical to make up for a missed dose, as it may cause side effects.
More information
The daily dose of Xenical is not recommended to be increased (more than 360mg), because it does not increase the therapeutic effect.
The probability of adverse reactions from the gastrointestinal tract can be increased if the patient is taking Xenical with high-fat foods. Therefore, the patient is recommended to control caloric intake to reduce any risk of adverse effects.
In patients with type 2 diabetes, a dose of hypoglycemic agents (for example, sulfonylureas) can be required to be decreased.
Storage
It is recommended to keep Xenical in an original container or package in order to protect capsules from moisture and light. Store Xenical capsules at room temperature below 30°C and out of the reach of children.Xenical safety information
Warnings
Patients taking antiepileptic drugs should be careful, because their simultaneous use with Xenical may develop seizures. Xenical prevents absorption of some fat-soluble vitamins, consumed with the food, so the patients are advised to take additional multivitamin complex. Vitamins are recommended to be taken two hours before or after Xenical.

Usually Xenical may cause gastrointestinal adverse events that normally pass mildly during long-term therapy with this anti-obesity agent. Adverse events are rarely reported to cease the use of Xenical. Generally, the adverse events during therapy with the anti-obesity agent are associated with a high level of fat consumed with food.
The most common adverse events caused by Xenical include flatulence, oily or liquid stool, oily spotting from the rectum, abdominal pain, oily evacuation, hypoglycemia, URI, influenza, or headache. Xenical may also cause abdominal distension, or hypoglycemia in patients with diabetes.
