Synthroid is highly effective in therapies of low levels of the thyroid hormone and goiters of certain kinds. This medicine frequently accompanies surgical interventions and other remedies for the management of specific types of thyroid cancer. Chemically, Synthroid is a pure thyroid hormone. Directions for use

You should strictly stick to your doctor’s directions.

Make sure your stomach is empty when taking Synthroid. Ingest one pill orally not later than 1-1.5 hour before a meal.

Avoid taking an antacid or any iron- or calcium-containing product within a time span of 4 hours of administering Synthroid.

If you or your child have trouble swallowing the whole tablet, you may prefer to crush the prescribed drug dose. Thoroughly mix the resulting drug powder with up to 10 mL (1-2 teaspoons) of water. Do not put away the prepared medicine for storage and use it straight away. Do NOT add the freshly prepared powder to a soybean formula for newborn babies. Synthroid reaches its highest efficiency in patients who take the drug strictly at the specified hour each day.

Your symptoms will be improved not sooner than in several weeks. Do not discontinue Synthroid even if this happens and you feel much better. Stopping or changing your dose should not be done without first consulting your physician.

Safety information

Do NOT start your Synthroid treatment if:

• you have a known allergic response to any component in Synthroid;
• you are suffering from adrenal gland issues or high levels of the thyroid hormone;
• you have suffered from a heart attack recently.

Avoid using Synthroid prior to checking with your pharmacist or doctor regarding medical issues you are currently concerned with:

• if you have undergone a surgery recently or are preparing for a surgery;
• if you are expecting a child or nursing an infant;
• if you are experiencing issues with digestive absorption or other stomach problems;
• if you are currently staying on some prescribed medicines, herbal decoctions, or additives.

Side effects

All drugs without exceptions are associated with a higher or lower risk of side effects. Nevertheless, many patients do not suffer from such adverse reactions or experience them at a tolerable degree.

Use of Synthroid does not entail commonly observed side effects.

Rarer and more serious side reactions include:

rash, itchy skin, reddening, hives, obstructed breathing, chest tightness, swelling in the facial area. These reactions are an alarming sign of allergic response – contact the nearest hospital immediately!

Among other hazardous side effects, the patients may experience the following:

severe headache, weakness in the muscles, feverish symptoms, shakiness, vomiting, quickened heartbeat and sleeplessness.
